A myth from Ancient Greece speaks
of a shepherd’s daughter known as
Arachne becoming such a master
of weaving that she dared to claim
she possessed greater skill than
Athena, the Olympian goddess of
wisdom and crafts. Upon hearing
this, Athena challenged her to a
head-to-head battle. According to
some versions, including Ovid’s, the
mortal’s handiwork was so beautiful
that Athena, outraged, transformed
her into a spider, destined to weave
her webs forever. In fact, the word
"arachne" still stands for spider in
the Greek language.
